02Orders of battle
Pick two armies. Pick the ground.
Order 01
Any army. Any era.
Legionaries against laser-armed machines. Winged hussars into a samurai line. Zulu horns closing round a redcoat square. More than 60 armies from 2,500 years of war, plus orcs, dwarves, battle mages, the walking dead and the Florida men, and every one of them can fight every other.
Plate 00 · The Legion v the Norsemen, 1,000 menOrder 02
A thousand men
Up to 1,000 soldiers on one field. Every one is a hand-drawn sprite with his own target, his own nerve and his own way of going down.
Order 03
Command or watch
Draw the lines, slow time and order the flank. Or set it going and let the camera find the fight. It plays out on its own either way.
Order 04
Everything breaks
Shells dig craters that men crawl into for cover. Walls come down, trees splinter and fall, and fire runs through the grass. The ground keeps every scar.
Order 05
Any ground
Green fields, desert, arctic, jungle, swamp, mountain and volcanic ash, in summer, autumn or winter, by day, dusk or night. Sand and mud slow a man down, and ice gives him no grip.
Order 06
History’s hard places
Omaha Beach. Rorke’s Drift. Hougoumont. Cemetery Ridge. Bunker Hill. Castle sieges and trench lines, with the defenders dug in where they stood.
Order 07
The arena
The Colosseum, with a packed house that roars at every kill. Gladiators, nets and tridents, lions, and an emperor who decides with his thumb.

The level editor
Paint the ground, cut rivers, raise hills and place the walls, trenches and forts, then send two armies onto it.

Report for duty.
One email when the Steam page opens and wishlists go live, and the odd dispatch from the front after that. Nothing else, and you can leave any time.
